Mobile Training: Skills on Wheels
How do we bridge the skills gap in rural communities? By bringing the training directly to them! St. Lawrence College's Innovation and Business Engagement department took the initiative to secure funding for two custom-built mobile training trailers. These trailers are equipped to deliver a range of training programs, from trades and culinary skills to wellness, right to the heart of Eastern Ontario.
The provincial funding, initially provided during the pandemic to boost workforce development and job seeker training, has transformed into a post-pandemic solution for skills training. These trailers now travel to high schools, employment centres, and other rural community hubs, offering hands-on training in carpentry, welding, electrical work, cooking, fitness, and hospitality. They've also become a valuable tool for promoting college education throughout the province.
The success of the mobile training trailers has led to an expansion of the training programs offered. Now, hair styling, aesthetics, and even EV maintenance are part of the curriculum. The trailers also support other workforce development initiatives, such as the City of Kingston's rural farming training and Kingston Economic Development's "Texture with Confidence" programs.
